Current Information:Age-22 94, Elsa Street, Limehouse HM Submarine E18 left England in September 1915 to take up patrol work in the Baltic operating from the Russian port of Reval. In late May, 1916, she sailed from Reval on what was to be her final patrol but as records differ it cannot be said with any certainty why she was never seen again. Some sources record that she was sunk on 24th May by a German ship whilst others say that on 26th May she torpedoed and damaged a German destroyer and that she was seen as late as 1st June. Official records give the date as 11th June 1916 but there is no evidence for this and was probably the date that the incident was officially written up. The wreck of E18 was found in 2009 off the coast of Estonia. The conning tower hatch is open which suggests that she was probably destroyed by a mine whilst sailing on the surface. Among those who died aboard was Frederick White. |
